Customer Rating: Summary: Solid Performance in a Netbook Comment: I had doubts about whether I would like this computer, but good things can come in small packages.
There is nothing fancy as far as overall performance. If you want a high-powered laptop or a gaming machine, look elsewhere. But, if you want to run simple applications, do office word processing, take notes, or surf the internet this is a very nice little computer.
Out of the box, setup was very swift and easy. I love the Solid State Hard Drives on this model. It has both an 8 GB for the operating system and a 32 GB drive for storing files. If you need more, you can add an SDHC card.
The WiFi connected easily and the included webcam comes bundled with the open-source Linux program called "Cheese", a rather cheesey version of MAC's Photobooth software.
The only thing I didn't like about the computer is the operating system, Xandros. With most computers, this would be a major score decrement. But, this is Linux!!! No problem. I loaded a new version of Linux known as Ubuntu customized for the Eee. It is a free download and a far superior OS in my opinion. Xandros is a good system for people who are uncomfortable with computers; I find it constraining.
If you decide you don't like Ubuntu or mess up the installation beyond all recognition...NO PROBLEM!! The Eee comes with a bundled DVD which allows you to create a boot drive on a USB flash drive and reload the original installation. A tinkerer's delight!!
Overall, the computer was studier than I anticipated. The keyboard is smaller than a full-sized keyboard and the shift key on the right is small and oddly placed, but there are no major complaints. The computer boots quickly and is very quiet with minimal fan noise. Highly Recommended!
Customer Rating: Summary: Side-effects of Xandros may include impatience, irritability, and in some cases, suicide. Comment: Wonderful little machine, exactly what I was looking for, except the terrible Xandros linux OS that comes with it. I thought I'd be able to stick it out and try it for a while, but after 5 minutes I was looking into Ubuntu for the EEE. Unless you're happy with a $500 fisher price toy, plan on installing a different version of linux or any kind of manageable operating system. If you cant do that, then get the 1000h with windows and save yourself the trouble.
Also, do not fool yourself into thinking this is all you need. If you have a bigger screen and keyboard at home, you will use that, and you should. Netbooks are not intended to be your main machine, and should rather function as your travel companion.
Customer Rating: Summary: Happy with EEE PC Comment: I bough the EEE PC 1000. It comes with Linux which I'm unfamiliar with but I'm learning. Struggled a bit to get the mouse sensitivity set. Had a little hick-up with font spacing changing while typing. Later found the answer on a forum that it happens if you press shift and space together. Overall I'm happy with the EEE PC. Has a great battery life and is small and light so easy to carry around. I wanted a portable netbook and that is what I got.
Customer Rating: Summary: Asus Eee 1000 Comment: I like this mini PC , it is small and light, this is what iam looking for
Customer Rating: Summary: Breaking away from Windows Comment: I just picked up the ASUS Eee PC 1000 3 weeks ago - this is my first non-Windows computer and I was impressed with the functionality, performance, and value provided by this device.
Its great having a ~3 pound laptop with a battery that lasts long enough that you don't need to lug around the power adapter.
Its great getting a computer that you DON'T need to spend a whole day cleaning out all kinds of junkware trial versions of stuff -- everything you need is pre-loaded and there's no junkware.
Its great getting a laptop that's always ready for use - boots in 20 seconds or less and runs entirely off solid state drives.
The Linux front-end is simple but functional. The keyboard is big enough to really type without fumbling, and the screen is big enough for most simple activities.
I haven't been expecting to attach all kinds of hardware or customize the thing - just use it out of the box for internet, skype, open office, etc.
The bottom line is that I believe its a very good 'netbook' - a very good value.
