The mat is not as thick as some other mats, but I find those thicker mats to be better for Pilates, not yoga. Thinner mats give you better support during balancing poses. The mat's smell is normal for yoga mats and will go away with time. I doubt you'll find a brand-new yoga mat that doesn't have a smell.
