Maybe this the way it is suppose to be but I still keep my head tucked in during engagements in paintball. Comment: The first time I played paintball, while running across the field a rogue ball went up and under my mask and caught me right on the upper neck. EXTREME PAIN! I bought one of these and that is the last time that will happen. Only con is on extremely hot days it can get a little itchy but it is worth it in the long run. There isn't much to it, just a piece of fabric and a tiny bit of padding in the middle. It does seem to be put together well and looks cool, and that is why I gave it one star, but as for being protective, time will tell if he gets hit in the neck/throat area.
