Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome Comment: While it took several months to actually ship to me. Now that I have it, I absolutely love it. Most of my friends have the 12 inch, 8 qt dutch oven. This is really great for large-group cooking. It also works well with ribs!
Customer Rating: Summary: For Family Camping This 10 qt Ducth Oven Can't Be Beat ! Comment: Camping with the family or in a large group can pose long cooking prep times possibly detracting from your enjoyment of your camp out. However, with this 10-qt Deep Camp Dutch Oven by Lodge not only can prep times be intergrated with other activities, but you can make anything in that oven that you can at home! YES, you can make anything in a Lodge 10-qt Dutch Oven that you can make at home, and make the portions needed for your family or group. My wife and I have been using Lodge Dutch Ovens to cook incredible and tasty meals on family and group camp outs for over 20 years, and still have our first oven up and going.
Cooking for two parents and four kids, or a large group is a snap. Stews, bisquits, bread, pasta dishes, that home spun spicy chili, soups, cassaroles, meat loaf and other meat dishes, baked egg dishes, pies, cobblers, you name it... and you can make it with this Dutch Oven, and make it in the quanity needed for your family or group. No one will go hungery with this large 10-qt Ducth Oven.
This cast iron item is made to very high standards of quality in materials and craftsmanship in manufacturing. In so, the oven is heavy and care should be used in lifting and moving it. The proper care of this cast iron oven is simple. DO NOT DROP it (it can crack), just hot water to clean, wipe dry and keep it seasoned. Also, the amount of coals (charcoal or wood) is much less than what you might think you may need. You DO NOT set the oven in a blazing fire or in a big deep bed of coals. This grossly excessive amount of heat will damage the oven, not to mention rendering your food as a black lump seared to the bottom. Only upwards to 40-ish charcoal bits are needed for an oven of this size. The instruction pamplete that comes with the oven clearly describes the amount of coals needed for different cooking situations. Please, take the time to read those directions. Should this care be maintained the oven will last a life time... several life times in fact.
Lodge also offers a cast iron lid lifter, a lid rest, and a trevit. I highly recommend that these items be purchased with the oven. The lid gets very hot (which also has coals on it)and the use of the lid lifter makes checking the food safe and easy. Also, when the lid must be lifted off of the oven to stir the food or add items you need to sit that heavy lid down somewhere. If you don't use the lid rest and use a rock, a table or bench you run the strong possibilty that some dirt, twigs, leaves, bugs or other crud may stick to the bottom of the lid and fall into the food when the lid is placed back onto the oven. Buy the lid lifter and lid rest to compliment this awesome Dutch Oven. Also, for cooking items that need to be lifted off the bottom or require air space under the food... get the cast iron trevit available from Lodge too. This is a great tool for cooking bread and bisquits in their own tins resting on the trevit.
All of Lodge's Ducth Ovens are made to the same high standards, but for a family or group camp out the large 10-qt Deep Ducth Oven is very well worth the investment. The use of smaller ovens for side dishes or for smaller meals is a good choice too. Many, many uses, ease in use, ease in clean up (as long as you don't burn your food to the bottom and sides with too much heat), ease in care, and long, long life... this item can't be beat. For cooking ideas there are scores of Dutch Oven Cook Books out there. Browse those cook books and buy one or two that you like. Practice cooking with the oven at home several times BEFORE you go on your outing, and in no time you will be a Dutch Oven "chef" creating wonderful meals for your family or group. Good eating equates to good camping ! Enjoy, and I'll see ya out there.
Customer Rating: Summary: Lodge is the only cast iron cookware to buy Comment: I own a 10 and a 14 quart pair of Dutch ovens. The larger one is big enough to bake things in, you invert a pie plate and place your cooking vessel inside the Dutch oven. They're without peer -- they're simply the best made. I'm dubious about the "preseasoned" iron -- it's just not that hard to season your own cast iron cookware.
They're excellent for camping (Lewis and Clark considered them some of the most important equipment they had) but they perform brilliantly indoors, too. I tend to use my big Dutch oven in place of my wok (the wok's too small). They'll develop a velvety interior in no time, you wash them with HOT WATER ONLY, NO SOAP! Cast iron develops the finish Teflon is meant to imitate.
These are ideal for deep-frying and for making huge batches of spaghetti sauce. If you camp, take them with you -- figure each charcoal briquette is about 45 degres Farenheit and work from there with top and bottom heat -- you can literally cook anything you would cook indoors in a Lodge Dutch oven. See if amazon offers "Lovin' Dutch Ovens" as a good jumping-off point.
These will last a lifetime. Seriously. I own cast iron cookware that's pushing a hundred years in age. These are crucial kitchen tools, second to none. Remember, Lodge is the only name in cast iron you ought to consider.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great for campouts or fish fries! Comment: Cast Iron is ALWAYS a good value for the money and it's indestructable (I'm still using my mother's Lodge skillet that she got for a wedding gift in 1954). This dutch oven, designed specifically for the camp or fireplace cook, goes from the fire to the table with ease. It stews and bakes beautifully - get a dutch oven cookbook and learn how to make campfire biscuits as well as those stews and chilis! Also makes a fabulous wedding, shower, or housewarming gift. Forget expensive wedding registries - buy the bride a lodge dutch oven and skillet. She'll hand them down to the next generation. Every camper can use this and so can every backyard griller. Great for the church fish fry too! Highly recommend!
