Editorial Reviews:

After the huge, lavish spectacles of previous tours, U2 decided to tone things down a bit for Elevation, which accompanied their All That You Can't Leave Behind album. Just as the album marked a return to a simpler more stripped-down sound, the live shows returned to smaller venues and a more intimate show, and from start to finish Elevation provides a welcome reminder of what a great band this is. Recorded in Boston, the show features a healthy mix of new and old songs, which were written over the course of two decades but sound as fresh and relevant as ever. From classics like "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Where the Streets Have No Name," and "I Will Follow" right up to instant favorites such as "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation," every track is stunningly executed. If you saw the concerts, this is a worthy and lasting souvenir; if you didn't, watch this and you might be kicking yourself. --Helen Marquis, Amazon.co.uk

Summary: "Can't Sing But I Got Soul"
Comment: "Elevation in Boston" provides yet another opportunity to experience a live act from the four boys from Dublin. As with any U2 concert, this performance definitely blows away 99% of the other live acts out there.

However, it is definitely not the best U2 concert of all time, or the even the best of the Elevation Tour. Bono's voice was still a little sore from doing previous shows, which he even admits before "Kite." He still sounds better than the average singer, but devoted U2 fans like myself have come to expect more than average from this band, especially if the concert makes it to DVD. As previous reviewers mentioned, the camerawork is not very flattering either. Also, the crowd could have been a little more enthusiastic. Watch "The Fly" and you'll see fans in the elipse leaning up against the rails looking like they're about to fall asleep. The documentary that accompanies the film even admits that the band and crowd didn't connect one of the nights (In case you didn't already know, this film is a combination of at least two different Boston concerts). Sure, this is a minor annoyance, but it is still an annoyance.

But beyond it's mistakes, it is still a great concert. U2 doesn't have any trouble creating an amazing setlist. Here's the setlist and how I rate each of the performances:

1. Elevation- 4 out of 5 stars
2. Beautiful Day- 4
3. Until the End of the World- 3.5
4. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of- 3.5
5. Kite- 4
6. Gone- 4.5
7. New York- 3
8. I Will Follow- 5
9. Sunday Bloody Sunday- 4
10. In a Little While- 4
11. Desire- 3.5
12. Stay (Faraway, So Close)- 5
13. Bad/40- 5
14. Where the Streets Have No Name- 5
15. Bullet the Blue Sky- 5
16. With or Without You- 4
17. The Fly- 5
18. Wake Up Dead Man- 3.5
19. Walk On- 5

The highlights of the show are a great version of "Streets," a rare chance to see/hear "Bad," an emotional acoustic version of "Stay," and a harder rock version of "The Fly."

The DVD also has some pretty decent bonuses. The Elevation Tour documentary is especially nice. We also get 3 bonus tracks: "Elevation" (Miami), "Stuck in a Moment" (Hanover/Dublin/France), and "Beautiful Day" (Dublin). The other good bonus is we are offered several different camera angles for most of the songs. My personal favorite angle is the "fancam," which shows you what it would've looked like to be inside the elipse during the Boston shows.

If you're gonna buy just one U2 DVD, I suggest you buy "U2 at Slane Castle," which is probably the best Elevation show and possibly U2's best show ever. But if you are dedicated fan, this DVD should definitely provide you with several hours of musical entertainment.

Summary: Absolutly fantasic
Comment: directed by the genius that is Hamish Hamilton, this show is one of the best shows i've seen period. perhaps eclipsed only by the U2 slane gig, and zoo tv from sydney. one of the best shows you will see, from the greatest band on the planet. u2 are just amazing from the subtle bass of adam clayton to the completley energising drum of larry mullen jr. the song writing genius's of bono and the edge is just awesone, both amazing musician's also, edge's guitar work just sends shivers up your spine, and bono, well, bono the man, he is just incredible, a true performer, when he's on song he has one of the best voices around. he was a little off in this show, but still it was one of the best recorded shows around. a true epic

Comment: After the intensity of Zoo TV and the seeking of Pop Mart, the Elevation Tour was a big hug and a kiss from the boys from Ireland. This is U2 at their spiritual, musical and interactive heights. From the loving interaction between the band members to the obvious delight of the fans this DVD captures a magical experience. Each tour from U2 is a gift and this DVD is an excellent way to remember! The tour is captured well -- great footage and sound. Thanks U2 for providing your fans with so much material to enjoy when you're not around.

Summary: Huge fan dissapointed
Comment: U2 is my favorite band. Period. The music they make, the things Bono is doing to help this world be a better place, all magnify the experience of listening to their music and watching them perform. I have never been to a concert. It is a dream of mine to one day attend one, anywhere, I don't care what seat, but I will be standing in line for days to get a chance to sit inside the oval.

I own every single U2 concert DVD, and this one was the last one on my list. $30 was not a steep price to pay to complete my collection. But man, if it hadn't been that way, I wouldn't have bought it for $10. Maybe I was spoiled with seeing their Vertigo tour DVD first, which is phenomenal, a spiritual experience almost.

The performances are flat. The concert opens extremely weak, probably since they play all of their new songs from All That You Can't Leave Behind for the first half, so if you hadn't heard their newest cd back then, you were lost, and you could tell the audience was lost with the exception of Beautiful Day and Elevation. In the special features, the director of the concert even admitted that the audience was really flat, but with the lousy camera shots, you don't get to see them anyways. He also admits that this dvd was an experimentation to find U2's new performance style after PopMart and Zoo TV.

Obviously, when the second half of the concert comes, and they begin to perform some classics, the audience gets into it more, making it a much better experience. But you shouldn't have to wait a good 50 mins for a concert to get good. Vertigo gripped me all the way through, non-stop. My roommate's favorite cd is ATYCLB, and he hated Elevation. Unfortunately, for people either just beginning to like U2, or want to find a pricey dvd expecting a quality experience, this one just isn't it. Out of my entire collection, Rattle and Hum, Goes Home, and Vertigo, this one is the worst. No doubt.
