Editorial Reviews:

The Scott's classic reel mower is light, maneuverable, and economical. The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for nine grass heights with very easy wheel tabs. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, and 20-inch cutting width, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. There's no soft cushion on the handle, which is too bad, but otherwise, the Scotts Classic is a durable, well-constructed, simple device.

Summary: Simple, Effective and East to Operate
Comment: I am a first time home owner and thus lawn mowing as a chore came to me with no prior experience. I did a lot of researching to find out which product may be right for my 3 lawns of approx. 2200 Sq. Ft area. Looked at gas as well as electric power equipment and they all looked quite daunting to haul from the store as well as to operate/maintain them. Thus, I chose this simple yet very effective product and decided to give it a try.

It was very easy to assemble and to my surprise, very easy to push and mow the lawn. It takes us less than 30 minutes now to mow the three separate grass areas. So much so that all our family members are keen to take turn and they all enjoy the mowing.

I would have liked the product to have an option for a basket to collect the cut grass. There are no attachments available with the product as well as at any other store. Thus I have no option but to let the cut grass blades go back into the lawn and let it mulch naturally.

All in all, a cheap, simple, effective and easy to operate product which also gives a good workout without polluting the environment.

Summary: a solid mower
Comment: Skeptical, I read all of the reviews here and made the decision to purchase this mower. I liked the fact that this mower is cheaper than some of the competition but also had a higher mowing height that others can't claim. Changing the height from out-of-the-box is easy via the arm adjustment arm on the rear weels. But getting it really low takes a bit more work. You must remove the wheels and change the front axle height.

Some quick background: I've never owned a mower before but have used gas and electric mowers from others. I've never used another reel mower so consider this review more of a comparison of reel vs gas/electric mowers. I'm a fit younger guy so I went into this with no real concerns about the challenge (or burden) of pushing a mower around.

One of the pieces of info I didn't get a good sense of from other reviews is how hard the mower must be pushed for it to function properly. I've found you must push the mower HARDER than a gas or electric mower. That's not to say it's a lot harder, but it's definitely more than an equivalent mower. The mower weight is definitely much lighter than other non-reel mowers, but with the energy needed to spin the wheels and blades it effectively makes it feel heavier than a much heavier gas mower.

Another tidbit that I didn't get is how well it cuts grass. I started with a very thick grass that was in dire need of mowing. Some recommend using a gas/electric mower first, but I was brave and plowed over my grass at the highest setting first, and then took subsequent passes at lower heights. Worked like a charm. That's not to say it wasn't a workout! But it was an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Especially when the neighbors would look over and wonder what I'm doing.

The cutting effectiveness of the mower is average. I would expect it to cut MORE than it does. In other words, I need to pass over the same spot twice about 20% of the time because the grass wasn't fully cut. This is probably due to the unevenness of the ground where the wheels are bouncing over and, as a result, not getting a consistently even flat cut.

A last point to offer: the grass does look HEALTHIER and has a better cut than my neighbors. In fact, if you have an ailing lawn reel mowers are, in my opinion, better remedies than electric/gas powered mowers.

I've mowed about 5 times since I've received the mower, and the only maintenance I've done is hosed down the mower after use and sprayed WD-40 across the cutting blades and axle near the wheels. It's a great feeling to not need to buy gas, tune the carb, or do any kind of maintenance for nearly 10 years. :)

Summary: Scotts 20 Inch Push Mower
Comment: Have used product for over two seasons.

Works well, but can't let grass get too tall.

Note not a one pass mow. You may need to do a cross hatch mow to be more effective.

I do enjoy the exercise and lack of noise.

Summary: Keep it short
Comment: I bought this mower for my yard last summer. It's easy to use and does a good job, but only as long as you do a good job keeping up with your yard work.

For the areas of my yard that the grass is in good condition, watered regularly, and I've grown new grass, this mower has done an excellent job. I usually mow once a week because I don't want the grass to get too long and have trouble mowing it, so it keeps me a bit more pro-active with the yard work.

However, my yard is currently a work in progress since the person I bought my house from left it full of weeds and crab grass. It doesn't cut low enough to get the weeds, and any tall grass, weeds, or crab grass (like over 8 inches) will just get pushed to ground and the mower will roll over it, not cut it. Obviously, this caused me some problems, and I'll have to pull out the weed whacker and go around the yard getting these areas and that can take some time.

My only other negative is sometime I'll be pushing along at a moderate pace and roll over a stick and it'll get jammed in the blades and make the mower come to a dead stop. Oh, I dislike that! Not necessarily a big stick, either. So I have to keep my eyes peeled for any sticks and usually try to clear the yard a bit of any debris before mowing.

Overall, it's a good product and it's nice not having to use gasoline. Less noise and no smell except the scent of the freshly cut blades of grass. But before buying this mower, make sure your yard is in the proper condition to maximize its effectiveness.

Summary: Great on everything except weeds
Comment: I purchased this mower at the beginning of summer, 2008, after reading a lot of reviews all around. On the whole, my experience has been very positive. This mower is easy to push---it's just as easy as any other push mower I've ever used. It's low maintenance. You don't have to mess with gas and oil. It isn't noisy, it isn't generating a ton of noxious emissions, it isn't throwing up dust (for those of us who suffer from allergies, this is a big deal).

Set up was a snap. Using it is simple. The only drawback is that this mower doesn't handle tall weeds (>6") very well at all. I had to go through with a weedwacker to get those. Also, it's tough to get right up next to a curb. Other than that, I have no complaints (even though I have gotten many strange looks and questions about it).
