Every office has its utility closets, where vital machinery labors away in anonymity, and McAfee 2000 Office Pro provides that same behind-the-scenes service to Windows machines. This suite of utilities combines several popular McAfee products (formerly sold separately) into one package with a single convenient interface. The utilities include: - McAfee VirusScan, for keeping malicious software off your machine. VirusScan incorporates VShield, which monitors your system's configuration for changes brought about by uncataloged viruses.
- McAfee Utilities, a suite unto itself, which catches disk errors, speeds backups, allows easy Registry modifications, and presents a better picture of your machine's hardware configuration than the one Windows provides.
- McAfee First Aid 2000, which provides a central interface for (among other things) undoing troublesome software installations and configuration changes.
- McAfee Uninstaller, which you can use to strip out unwanted programs and their deadwood library files to save disk space.
- McAfee Y2K Survival Kit, for scanning your system for references to potentially problematic two-digit year references.
- McAfee Oil Change, which makes it easier to scan software publishers' Internet sites for program updates and new drivers.
- McAfee Guard Dog, which helps protect your machine from bad-news Internet software and alert you to occasions when your programs secretly send information out via the network. Plus, this suite comes with PGP Security Suite, which puts a user-friendly face on Pretty Good Privacy and public-key cryptography. With PGP security, you can encrypt data and have some assurance that the parties you exchange it with really are who they claim to be.
Overall, McAfee Office 2000 Pro represents a worthwhile buy. Its antivirus services are some of the best on the market, and the McAfee Utilities (formerly sold as the acclaimed Nuts & Bolts) really do help most machines perform more speedily. Not everyone needs PGP protection, but the McAfee PGP tools do their jobs and are nice to have around. Pick up this suite, optimize your system with it every few months, and, in the meantime, enjoy the protection of VirusScan and First Aid. --David Wall
