Summary: Sixteen Years & Going Strong
Comment: I bought mine in October of 1992 as electrical engineering student. In 16 years, it has never left my side. It is intuitive to use, intelligently designed, has lots of handy features built in and is as tough as a VW Beetle. I've dropped mine (and sat on it) more times than I can remember and it has suffered no problems whatsoever.
I recently added up how much money I have earned (so far) with this calculator, and the TI-86 is easily the single most cost-effective purchase I have ever made in my life.
I've hoped for an upgraded version, such as more memory or a colored screen, but honestly there is no compelling reason to upgrade. If I ever need more, I'd probably start with a pocket PC and go from there.
After sixteen years of great service, I'd only buy another TI-86.

Summary: Reliable, Durable, Great for Most Applications
Comment: I have been using my TI-86 for 8 years now and it has never had any kind of problems.
I have left this calculator out in my car during the freezing Michigan Winters for weeks on end as well as the 100 degree Summers for the same amount of time. Never a single problem with the calculator.
The calculator has done almost everything I have needed of it all the way through Calculus and Linear Algebra. With that said, the TI-89 and others have much more utility for the high end courses, and are not hugely more expensive.
If you are going to be in a lot of college courses that have high end mathematics, then I would go for the TI-89 or other higher end calculator. If you aren't then it might be worth saving a little money on this incredibly durable calculator that will likely do everything you need it to.
