Watanabe (2006) in a recent review of Intentional healing literature remarks:
Today in the West, mind-body modalities are being utilized as support to conventional medicine and, added that Epsteins (1996) assertion that intentionality is the underpinning of the integrated mind-body medical system. Without it, there is no mind-body medicine. Prince Charles is advocating the same and yet h medical establishment is up in arms to protect their interests in the name of scarce resources.
According to Weisskopf (2004) unconventional modalities are widely used by individuals for preventive and alternative healing techniques. In 1992, the US Congress
created the National Center for Complimentary and alternative medicine (NCCAM) within the National Institutes of health to research unconventional mind and body modalities. I wonder whether there is such a recognised body/agency in UK undertaking similar role.
A 2002 Study showed that more than 30% of the U.S adult population used some kind of relaxation techniques and imagery, biofeedback, hypnosis, and more that 50% of the population used prayer for healing and well-being (NIH,2004). Nevertheless, Cohen (2003) remarked that since research in this field is in its infancy, more evidence in terms of safety and efficacy of specific modalities is necessary, and clarification of efficacy will bring integrity to the field.
