Sam Lingayah’s Reminiscences of an Immigrant is a very interesting work based on the life and struggles of the author who was practically illiterate. But by dint of hard work he educated himself to the highest level in UK thanks to the unique opportunity offered by a far-sighted British academician. As he depicted his life he painted the social and political scenes of his time putting the development of his country, Mauritius, in context. It is a book worth reading. In doing so I am gathering together the philosophical thoughts and ideas which he has recorded herein. Immigrants including everyone else from everywhere will find his life philosophy a mine of inspiration

The approach used in writing this book is down-to-earth without any academic pretensions. It is primarily seeking to convey events as experienced, with all the raw feelings, frustration, anger and hopelessness, as aroused at specific times and occasions in the author’s quest for his dreams and goals. A Child Labourer’s Quest for Social Justice Sam Lingayah, born into a working class family in a superstition-dominated close community, where he developed an acute observation and consciousness of social injustice from an early age during his experiences as a child labourer. He began to question the fact that why his and other working class’s parents could never make ends meet, despite hard work and sacrifices. Viewing this as a monstrous injustice, he embarked on a long gruelling journey, vowing to challenge it. Child Labourer to British Soldier Failing to resolve the problem in his community, Sam left home in order to serve apprenticeships in greengrocery and also attempting to learn to drive a bulldozer. Unable to accept deeply rooted tradition of his community, he was dubbed as a maverick, an influenced to be avoided by his peers. This status was confirmed by the ultimate outrage of joining the British army on his 18th birthday and served overseas. To his great surprise, it was during the army service in the Middle East that he discovered the key to overcoming the indignity of poverty but also his potential for self-development for greater things in life. The Indian Odyssey Demobilised from the army after a three-year service, the impatient Sam betrayed his parents’ trust in trying to implement his education programme in India. His father’s sudden death severely interrupted financial support. Unable to pay college fee, he was expelled. Destitute, he encountered some physical violence in Bombay; expulsion from Gandhi’s ashram; and, experiencing a relapse of depression, lost faith in life’s worthiness.

L’International Mauritius Directory (IMD) est une référence économique et professionnelle. Cet annuaire couvre des secteurs allant du gouvernement au tourisme en passant par les entreprises et les marques. L’IMD a été lancé en 1982. En 2006, l’Eco Austral, magazine économique régional, en fait l’acquisition. La direction des Editions de l’océan Indien (EOI) a décidé de ne plus vendre les Past Exam Papers des School Certificate et Higher School Certificate. Ils ne seront disponibles ni en rayons ni chez ses revendeurs auxquels elle a demandé de retourner les exemplaires restants.

Car à Rs 143, ce best-seller traditionnel aux côtés des Courrier International (Rs 196) et autres le Point (Rs 178), souffre directement de la faiblesse de la roupie et de la hausse du coût de la vie.

Cambridge s'attaque aux copies piratées à Maurice

Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) s'intéresse vivement aux librairies et maisons d'édition vendant les copies piratées de son syllabus de SC & de HSC ainsi que celles de past examinations question papers. D'où la visite durant la semaine écoulée de Irana Morrish, Group Manager for Curriculum and Teacher Support à CIE. Son constat sur le terrain n'a pas été vain. Le directeur d'un centre de formation, situé dans la capitale, serait dans le collimateur de l'organisme anglais. Celui-ci aurait copié et proposé ensuite à son nom le syllabus A Level Computing.

L’introduction des nouveaux manuels de Standard I, et surtout celui d’anglais, à partir de lundi fait face à la résistance. Profs, maîtres d’école et inspecteurs estiment que son contenu est hors de portée des écoliers. Le ministère s’en défend et va de l’avant avec son introduction.

Les plus critiques pensent ne pas pouvoir terminer le manuel en deux trimestres seulement, car ils le jugent d’un niveau trop élevé. Dès la présentation des nouveaux manuels la semaine dernière, celui destiné à l’enseignement de l’anglais a commencé à inspirer des craintes.
